They love their job.
The sheep will clear foliage to a browse height of about 4.5 feet, making it very easy to cut the exposed vines to kill the ivy taking over trees.

Volunteers gathered this debris after the sheep removed the ivy. It would have been very dangerous to use any other method of clearing.
Ivy shades the buds reducing leaves and starving roots leaving trees vulnerable to wind, ice and snow. Access along the river has been regained following repeated grazing of the privet that had taken over the flood plain.
